Walnut Church
of Christ … Through the
Years
1920’s –
Twenty-five Christians begin a new church on Broad Street and eventually build
a church building at 20th and Pine at a cost of $7,500. Weekly
contribution was $25.
1930’s – About
100 members relocate the congregation to 12th and Walnut in 1929.
Weekly contributions doubled to $50.
1940’s - James Harvey Scott has a long tenure as
Walnut’s minister (1941-1952). The congregation grew during the war years and
added a two story wing. 1947 directory listed 309 names.
1950’s -Walnut
begins a long association with missionary Joe Cannon and also begins support of
several children’s homes. 1958 directory listed 381 names.
1960’s – Weekly
church budget for 1960 - $625. V.E.Howard brings International Gospel Hour and
Gospel Sing Song to Walnut. New church building at 11th and Hazel in
1968. D.A.Shofner retired after 40 plus years as an elder.
1970’s – Weekly
church budget for 1970 - $2,000. Church property valued at $500,000. Journey to
Eternity evangelistic program successful.
1980’s –
Christian Pre-School of Texarkana at Walnut. Soul Winning Workshop hosted by
Texarkana area churches. 1987 directory listed 773 names.
1990’s – Numerous
mission trips to Russia and church established in Minsk, Belarus. Walnut has
active youth ministry. Moores Lane Property purchased in 1999. 1997 directory
listed 797 names.
2000’s – Catching
God’s Vision campaign raised over $2,000,000 for new building. Victory in Jesus
campaign hosted by Texarkana area churches. July 18, 2004 – first Sunday in new
facility on Morres Lane. October 3, 2004 – 718 attend Homecoming and Dedication
Day.
2010 – Walnut is
a healthy church with 650 members involved in over 75 ministries. God has
blessed Walnut with a $7,000,000, thirty acre campus and a weekly budget of
$17,000.
